FAQ

You will need to attend Rules Interpretation Classes if: you scored less than 75 on your first FHSAA test, you are a new (first- or second-year) official, the Executive Board has determined that you need to sharpen your officiating skills or rules application knowledge or you are new to the MDBOA.*

If you are a varsity official who does not attend your required Rules Interpretation Classes, you will not be eligible to receive varsity assignments for the entire year. If you are a new or transfer official who was not granted an exemption from the classes and still do not attend them, you will not get a schedule of game assignments at all.**

*Transfer officials may be granted an exception by the Booking Commissioner or a member of his or her staff.

**This provision may be waived for extraordinary reasons with a recommendation from the Grievance Committee.

Failing to register or reregister by the required date will make you ineligible to receive game assignments until January 1st.

When you first register to be a part of the FHSAA, you will be given an ID# and a password. You will need this ID# and password to register for your FHSAA Basketball Officials Test. Visit the FHSAA website to sign up for your exam and find test dates and deadlines.

What games you are assigned depends on your skill level, rank, classification and availability. It is your obligation to properly mark your availability in ArbiterSports. Failure to do so could result in a fine, should you have to turn back an assigned game.

Furthermore, it is important to note that officials who are not in “good standing” are not eligible to receive game assignments. To be in good standing, an official must have successfully registered with the FHSAA and the MDBOA and have paid all fees, dues and current and outstanding fines established and approved by those organizations. An official must be in good standing on or before October 15th to receive game assignments for that season.

If you don’t score a 75 or higher on your exam, you will not be eligible to receive varsity game assignments. You will be classified as a B-group official and only allowed to officiate middle school or junior varsity basketball games. You will also be required to attend and successfully complete the MDBOA Rules Interpretation Classes the following season, even if you completed it previously.

If it’s a high school girls game, contact the Assistant Booking Commissioner (Girls). If it’s a high school boys game, contact the Assistant Booking Commissioner (Boys). If neither are available, contact the Booking Commissioner. Contact information for all of the above individuals can be found here

After two unexcused turn backs, you will be fined a game fee for every game you turn back from then on. Game fees are $93 for a varsity game, $70 for a junior varsity game and $70 for a middle school game.

All members of the MDBOA Executive Board can be contacted by email at the contact information listed here.

All General Meeting dates are listed here. If you are unable to attend a General Meeting, you must contact the Booking Commissioner by email, which is listed here.

You are required to attend at least seven General Meetings, and failure to do so may result in a fine and affect game assignments for that season.

All MDBOA officials will need to wear a black and white striped shirt with the required FHSAA insignia and wording, as mandated by the FHSAA. The official uniform also includes: black pants, black socks, black shoes, a black Fox 40 whistle with a black lanyard and the official black MDBOA jacket. MDBOA officials are not allowed to wear anything other than what is mentioned above.

Both the required jackets and black and white striped shirts are custom made, and can be purchased directly from the MDBOA. These uniform regulations are in compliance with the National Federation of High School (NFHS) and FHSAA uniform guidelines. Prices change yearly, so contact the MDBOA Treasurer to find out about pricing and availability.

If you have unresolved financial obligations with the MDBOA, you can register to join the organization but you will not be eligible to receive games. Once all fines, fees and past due obligations have been paid, you will be given game assignments.
